The Amnesiac’s Dilemma: Dancing with AI on the Brink of Extinction

Monkey Detonator by Banksy

Most mornings, I indulge in a thought experiment to awaken my mind and make sense of our chaotic world. Imagine waking up with amnesia, devoid of any memory of your past. Your personal beliefs, political allegiances, and social norms have vanished. The burden of bills, responsibilities, and relationships are wiped clean from your consciousness. A blank slate, you stand unencumbered by the weight of history or the shackles of societal expectations.

A messenger appears, tasked with the duty of briefing you on the current state of the world. They impart information about global conflicts, environmental crises, and the complex web of human connections that underpin our reality.

The world around you is wired on hair triggers to explode. Primates perpetuating piss lines with promethean fire. They have harnessed the power of the atomic gods, their fingertips trembling on the launch buttons. Now, they have also created artificial intelligence — a force that could either save them from themselves or end their existence altogether.

Banksy | Monkey Parliament

As you struggle to comprehend the absurdity of the situation, you start to realize that the fear of artificial intelligence should not be seen in isolation. It should be viewed in perspective with the current predicament of mutually assured destruction. We, as a species, have already set ourselves on a collision course with annihilation. We’ve been dangling on the precipice for decades, tempting fate with every passing moment.

In this volatile context, the rise of AI could be seen as a potential savior, as much as a harbinger of doom. On one hand, AI could exacerbate the risks, amplifying our destructive tendencies and pushing us closer to the edge. On the other hand, it could provide us with the tools to defuse the hair triggers, stabilize the global order, and perhaps even find a way to transform our primal instincts into a more harmonious coexistence.

As I ponder this thought experiment, I am reminded of the immense power and responsibility that rests on our collective shoulders. Our fate lies in our ability to navigate the treacherous waters between the Scylla of artificial intelligence and the Charybdis of mutually assured destruction.

So, let us not fear AI as an isolated threat, but rather see it as a reflection of our own potential — for better or worse. Let us strive to temper our fear with wisdom and seek to harness the power of AI to guide us away from the brink of oblivion, rather than push us over the edge.
